Aftercare tattoo

In addition to a fantastic picture on your body, you probably also have a lot of information about aftercare of your tattoo. All these aftercare methods naturally have the ultimate goal to let your tattoo heal as quickly and beautifully as possible. But what is it all about now exactly? Below we explain which aftercare aspects can be addressed in the care of your newly created tattoo:

Washing is essential for hygienic healing of your tattoo.

Always make sure you have clean hands before getting a tattoo, so start by washing your hands thoroughly. Then wash the tattoo with a mild, unscented soap (preferably Unicura) and rinse with lukewarm water. Gently pat it dry with a clean, lint-free cloth. The first days you wash your tattoo twice a day. If healing continues smoothly, washing once a day is sufficient.

After washing and gently dabbing your tattoo, your skin can feel very dry.

A too dry tattoo can cause small tears and cracks which can damage the tattoo.

That is why in many cases it is advised to lubricate your tattoo with Vaseline or Bepanthene.

This way your skin remains supple, irritations can be reduced and your tattoo can heal as beautifully as possible.

In any case, lubricate your tattoo after every wash, twice a day in the first days. If your tattoo has healed a bit more, you can still lubricate twice a day, with an extra lubrication in between if your skin starts to feel very dry. Apply a little sparingly, it is not the intention that your tattoo is constantly covered under a thick layer of ointment.

So lubricate thinly, so that the product can absorb well and do its job.

It is normal for black sheets / ink to wash off the skin after some time. Don't be alarmed by that. It's part of the healing process.

Fresh Tattoo - DON'Ts

  • Keep your healing tattoo out of the sun or cover it well with a clean, lint-free piece of clothing

  • Do not take a sauna, swim, or bath while your tattoo is healing. (Swimming / bath water contains too many bacteria and can cause an infection. It also makes your skin too soft, which can prevent proper healing)

  • Do not touch that! Do not butts, scratches, or touch it in any other way. If it itches too much, you can hit it lightly with a flat hand.

Fresh Tattoo - DO's

  • Coat your (newly) healed tattoo with a good sunscreen.

  • Change your bed regularly while your tattoo is healing.

  • Always keep your tattoo as dry as possible.

A freshly applied piercing can be compared to a deep wound in your skin. It is very important that you take good care of your piercing. You will receive verbal and written instructions from the piercer on how to do this. The instruction must include how to take care of the piercing and that you should contact your doctor in case of complaints (severe redness, swelling, pussing, wound fluid).

The piercing wound needs time and care to heal. It can take a long time to heal a piercing wound (from 4 weeks to 9 months). Scar tissue develops in some people as a result of piercing. In addition, the piercing wound may heal badly if it has been infected. It is not yet known what the consequences are for some piercings in later life.

Fresh Piercing - DON'Ts

  • Do not apply ointment, Purol, Vaseline or the like on the wound.

  • Do not drip wound disinfectants such as sterilon or betadine on the wound.

  • Do not wear band-aids over the piercing unless necessary during short-term sports activities.

  • Do not wear tight or dirty clothing with a body piercing (eg nipple or belly piercing, etc.).

  • During the healing process, avoid contact with swimming water (chlorine pools, hot tubs, natural swimming water). Also do not use a steam bath.

  • Never remove the jewelry yourself. Always contact the doctor in case of extreme redness, swelling, bleeding, pussing, color change, outgrowth or rejection symptoms of the wound or pain.

Fresh Piercing - DO's

  • Touch the piercing with your hands as little as possible.

  • Wash the area around the wound twice a day with a mild unscented soap or saline solution until the wound is completely healed.

  • Pat the area around the wound dry with a tissue after washing.

  • After washing, keep the piercing dry as much as possible.
